-sepet!

oh yah! details on today's malay cultural appreciation sabbaticals!

we watched sepet a malay film! it was really good!

tagline: "One Chinese boy, one Malay girl, one unforgetable love story."

well it's like comedy-romance-drama, about orked (a malay girl) who falls for ah loong, or jason (a chinese boy) when she buys a takeshi kaneshiro film from his cd stall.

they face many problems because malay and chinese people just don't mix then and they are afraid of their parents' opinions. also, jason has fallen into some trouble with 'jimmy', and at the end of the movie makes jimmy's sister pregnant, causing him and orked to drift apart.

but then orked realizes she really loves him just as she is on the way to the airport to go to england on a scholarship, and calls him- but then jason has been shot on his way to the airport to see orked! the film shows him lying on the ground, several bullet shots on his shirt and arm, with the phone just a few cm away ringing.

but yet, there's a cliffhanger as orked's call is answered by someone who sounds oddly like jason and then the credits start rolling. and all of us are like, WAIT. ISN'T HE DEAD?!

well yeah. it's a very profound movie, made even more profound by the fact I just read DAZ 4 ZOE which is basically about the same problem: racial disharmony.

'sepet' means 'slit-eyed' in malay and many may think it's a link to the way malays look down on chinese and vice-versa in the movie, as they judge by stereotypes.

but as one girl chim-ly put it, the film is called sepet because "some people look at the world through slit eyes, but they need to open up their eyes to see it better".

so chim right! but so right! we all need to open up our eyes. this movie is a must-watch :DDD
